Lagna (Ascendant) Calculator
Your Lagna, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth — the foundation every other house and placement in your chart is measured from.
The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it's the one placement that needs your precise birth time and birth place, not just your date, to calculate correctly.

What is a Lagna (Ascendant)?
Your Lagna is the zodiac sign that was crossing the eastern horizon at your exact place and moment of birth. It becomes the first house of your birth chart, and every other house — career, relationships, health, wealth — is counted outward from it.
Where the Moon sign reflects your inner emotional world, the Lagna is often described as how you meet the world: your outward personality, physical characteristics, and the lens the rest of your chart is read through.
How your Lagna is calculated
The calculation combines your birth date, exact birth time, and birth coordinates to find which degree of the zodiac was rising on the eastern horizon at that instant, using the same sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) system as the rest of your Vedic chart.
Because the Ascendant completes a full trip through all 12 signs roughly every 24 hours, it moves about one sign every two hours — a birth time that's off by even 15–20 minutes can shift it into a neighboring sign, which is why this is the one reading that most depends on an accurate birth time.
Why your Lagna matters
Vedic astrologers treat the Lagna, not the Moon or Sun sign, as the true starting point for reading a birth chart — it decides which planet rules which house for you specifically, which is why two people born on the same day can have very different charts if their birth times differ.
It's also the placement most closely tied to physical build and first impressions, and is a key input for timing life events through the Dasha (planetary period) system.
