Moon sign — a zodiac wheel around a crescent moon

Moon Sign Calculator

Your Moon sign (Rashi) is the zodiac sign the Moon was placed in at the exact moment of your birth. In Vedic astrology, it's the sign your day-to-day horoscope (Rashifal) is actually based on — not your Western sun sign.

Unlike the Sun, the Moon moves roughly one zodiac sign every two to two-and-a-half days, so your exact birth date (and, near a sign change, your birth time) matters for an accurate result.

What is a Moon sign (Rashi)?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your exact moment of birth, based on its sidereal (fixed-star) position rather than the tropical system Western astrology uses. It reflects your emotional nature, instincts, and the inner mind (manas) — how you react, feel, and process the world, as opposed to the Sun sign's focus on core identity.

In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign is considered central enough that most people are traditionally introduced by their Rashi, not their Sun sign, and it's the reference point most personal predictions are built from.

How your Moon sign is calculated

The calculation finds the Moon's sidereal longitude at your exact birth date and time, using the Lahiri ayanamsa (the standard correction applied in Vedic astrology to account for the slow precession of the equinoxes), then maps that longitude onto one of the 12 zodiac signs.

Because the Moon moves quickly across the sky — about 13° a day — the more precise your birth date, the more reliable the result. Birth time matters most if you were born close to the moment the Moon crossed from one sign into the next.

Why your Moon sign matters

Your Rashi is used for far more than a personality snapshot — it's the basis for monthly and yearly horoscope predictions (Rashifal), for choosing auspicious timings (muhurat), and for compatibility matching (Kundli Milan) between prospective partners.

Many families also use the Moon sign's ruling nakshatra to choose the first syllable of a baby's name — one of the reasons an accurate birth-time-based reading, not a generic sun-sign horoscope, is considered important in Vedic tradition.
